In 1931, after a lengthy discussion with Tolkien and another close friend, Hugo Dyson, he reconverted to Christianity and (to the regret of Catholic Tolkien) joined the Church of England. He noted, "I came into Christianity kicking and screaming."
"If it has four legs and is not a chair, has wings and is not an aeroplane, or swims and is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it." (1986)
Online Quiz:
Dixie Royal You are 87% true Southern!
You are pure belle or gentleman! You know your Jones Soda, Nehi and RC colas, your Moon Pies and sweet potato pie; you'd absolutely die without air conditioners in the summer, and you've seen Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes (or read the book!). Your grandmother lives in an antebellum home and has a cook who makes the best fried chicken and asparagus casserole and summer squash and everything else in the world. And you know the taste of honeysuckle and the feel of grass between your toes. You are blessed.
NY has it, jem has it, I, too, have developed the same symptoms. Dang gastrointestinal virus! Friday is supposed to be the pigging out day. And now we couldn't eat anything but clear liquid diet. Oh, well.
As you were ordering your jambalaya, I whispered, "Hey, this one's on me." Hee hee, sorry to interrupt you like that.
"We are eating here, right?" you asked afterward. "Of course," I replied.
And we went sitting at one of the benches. It's cool how they put white fences around the area.
Most of the time, you did the talking, as I never have enough confidence to tell stories in person. This blog is all I have, and maybe chatting. I am a different persona online, I guess.
Funny, you reminding me of my youngest brother. Will he turn out to be like you? What a simple thought.
You know, what? Today, despite of using yet another problematic computer to control the machine, I managed to finish two big deposition schemes. Hooray!
I skipped lunch for that. Well, my lunch was usually nothing but peanut butter granola bars, the generic version of this. So, when the experiments were finally finished at 6:40-ish PM, I was more than eager to heat up my Weight Watchers frozen dinner --with left-over steak on the side. I mean...this morning, when I took out the Creamy Chicken Tuscan box from the freezer, I noticed that it only had 190 calories total from the chicken and the one-half cup of zuchini and other vegetables. So, when I saw that lonely steak in the fridge, I figured, there would be nothing wrong with the extra protein. Excuses, excuses...
Anyway, I heated those things in the microwave for about 5 minutes, scanned through the paper version of The Battalion in the meantime, and when it was all done, I headed back upstairs to eat. I took out my utensils, FYI, I eat frozen food at the office in style honest-to-goodness real fork, knife and spoon.
As I was having my first taste of the dinner, I opened youtube, and search stringing for David Letterman. But suddenly, the fire alarm went off, I think it was right in the middle of the interview with Marilyn Manson. That was how cruel the situation was. Circumstances, emergency or otherwise, pull people out of their dinnertime. No wonder Mother vetoed against me taking into early admission to medical school here. There just bound to be many many of that kind of interruption in doctors' lifes, she said. 'kay, Mommy, I got it now.
I looked at my dinner and was torn in between to just stay there at the office and keep eating or to go out to safety. It might be just yet another false alarm. But then the thought of a headline "A 26 Year Old Graduate Student Dies inAsphyxation While Holding What Appeared to be a Frozen Food Dinner and a Steak" was not enticing enough. So, I joined the bandwagon of grumpy graduate students down to the ground floor and out. We could've picnic out there, the weather was nice.
20 minutes later, they annnounced that we could go in. I don't think anyone bothered to ask what was truly happening.
Why should I even bother telling you about all this? There's nothing you can do anyway. Well, yeah. But we can laugh together. Come on... Uhm...
It was so funny how you tried to confine your reaction, to keep your cool during the "confession". I saw the twitchings on the upper part of your right eye. And you, at the same time, should have noticed how my face turned the reddest red.
All in all, we both were so naive. So, now, let's just laugh about it.
Thought he had forgotten about our date, turned out he didn't. "I am picking you up in 30 minutes." Hee hee... wee wee wee... *Flight of the Bumblebee in the background*. It was kinda a date. I feel stupid already. I hate April. I hate "games".
Tuh kan, susah tidur lagi, lama juga ini serangan batin :p

Sometimes the system goes on the blink and the whole thing turns out wrong
Last night, you got the answer to the first of the three burning questions of the past seven months. Not in the most direct manner anyway, but it cleared up things, a whole lot and more. You had anticipated that it would be just the case, but you still took it hard, a little too hard.
You had your supportive group with you right at that moment. They are the best one in the whole world, no wonder you love these girls so much. You tried to keep your cool, almost to no avail.
"I just need to cry," you announced to them.
They looked at you sad. Little bubbles managed to drop from your eyes along with some expletives you whispered many many times.
"Turn right, Princy," you said to your sister the driver, "I have these poundings in my head, we need to stop by at the grocery." You were hoping that a sugar-induced comma will be a temporary sweet release, literally, from it all. At home, you took a shower and then you went to sleep, or at least tried to. For the first four hours, your eye lids were closed but your mind did not.
You usually went running in the out to help you passed through a time like this. You figured that 5k in the morning would be just perfect, plus it was only just a couple hours away. But when the alarm finally went off, you felt sudden cramps on both of your feet. You decided it was best to just stay put for a couple more hours and you crawled back to the fetal position.
When you finally woke up, it felt like your world was just not the same, it was emptier and idler. Once you managed to put yourself together, you felt like cooking lunch from scratch. You forgot when was it exactly the last time you do just that. You and your sister were able to gather all the ingredients for the menu --steak with mashed potatoes, her inquiry, some simple fried rice, yours. You then proceeded to cooking. You suddenly remember what you liked about it. You enjoyed the stillness of the moments. It was just you and the million of micro things to prepare before you could finish those "perfect" meals.
Gosh, they were delicious. Your sister agreed too.
When the time for football practice time came, you already fell much much better. The cooking helped a lot, you thought. All the way through practice, you made a mental assesment. All these times, did it deserve the commotions (that were mostly in your head)? You knew there was a switch somewhere in your heart to instantly turn it off.
"It was never the object," you said to yourself, "it was the idea of the object."
You went home relieved. But several hours later, you still couldn't help yourself but to nurture this wild growth of tini-tiny hope and to fall for the same thing over and over. You know you shouldn't.
By the end of the night, mostly what you felt was anger. And it wasn't directed to yourself, anyone, or anything else for that matter. You just hoped there was a mental sandbag you could punch and kick.
Apropos to the matter at hand, here's an excerpt from one of Ivy League's school newspaper back at the land of the US of A :
At the heart of Princetonians' style is a sense of timelessness. No university student body better expresses Oldfield's belief that fashion is simply "a gentle progression of revisited ideas." Navy blazers, top siders, playful plaids and sinful stripes worn in garishly glamorous fashion? They'll outlive us all. The men of Princeton have used their herringbones and tweeds to prove, in the words of Yves Saint Laurent, that while "fashion fades, style is eternal." At least, preppy style.
I don't know about you, but here at our campus, I cherish the days when there are no public sights of guys in (plaid) pajamas bottom or plaid bermuda shorts. I am sure NY shares my opinion on it too. Hee hee hee...

I have just realized that the Firefox update includes feature previously seen (only?) in Opera, which is preserving the last tabs opened on the browser. Cool! Update: My bet, there is no such feature. I was just seeing things apparently. This computer needs a heckuva work put into it.

Love...LOVE part of the melody picking on guitar, some of the strumming, the violin towards the end, and last but not least the regretful-sell-reproach-apologetic-full-of-remorse sounded vocal.
I have to block out thoughts of you so I don’t lose my head They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I’m alone Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain An ounce of peace is all I want for you. Will you never call again? And will you never say that you love me just to put in my face? And will you never try to reach me? It is I that wanted space
Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you
I’m sober now for 3 whole months it’s one accomplishment that you helped me with The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won’t touch again In my sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight You never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate You made me compliment myself when it was way too hard to take So I’ll drive so fucking far away that I never cross your mind And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind
Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you
Hate me in ways Yeah ways hard to swallow Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you
And with a sad heart I say bye to you and wave Kicking shadows on the street for every mistake that I had made And like a baby boy I never was a man Until I saw your blue eyes cry and I held your face in my hand And then I fell down yelling “make it go away!” Just make a smile come back and shine just like it used to be And then she whispered, “How can you do this to me?”
Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn’t do for you
Hate me in ways Yeah ways hard to swallow Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you
Pertemuan maya keluarga, minus Ma'e yang lagi kerja...
Two Three things:
Too many temptations to fall into, too many mistakes to be listed, the agonies and sorrows, the old familiar circles, and to think that one's supposed to be just been saved from them all.
A mention of your name and before I knew, I was on a faster-than-the-speed-of-sound to melancholic blues.
Thanks for the leads, it finally hit me. Naivety....hehehe.
PS: My one-time object of infatuation (and his wife) had their baby baptized the other day at St. Mary's, I just found out. *Lamenting, it should be a three of us up there at the altar* He he he, just kidding.
Hehe, I was going to tell you all about the details on the outdoor procession for Stations of the Cross (all 14 of 'em, in Spanish) I was a part of yesterday at noon. But it's getting too long as well as out of the moment. Suffice it to say, against my own conviction, I couldn't pass a Hispanic as some random people kept coming to me asking in Ingles "Do you understand?" and "Would you hold this for the next station, please?"
I suspect that this kind of treatment was due to:
a) My generic sign of the Cross b) My body language c) I've been here too long for them to notice that I wasn't a part of their community d) All of the above
Anyway, the other day, NY and I went to Super-Walmart and we happened to pass through the bedding section on the back and found a rack full of bed-in-a-bag. They were unbelievably affordable --not bad for a 160 count-- and also came in all sizes, patterns, and colors. The most important thing was that the bag contained a complete set of bedding things: both sham and pillow cover, both flat and fitted sheet, skirt, and comforter. So we decided that we each buy one. Our first complete set ever. How I love these things! So now, my morning ritual gets a bit more complicated. It includes making sure that the upper part of the flat sheet folded nicely on top of the comforter--for both beds-- as Tuan Putrinever rarely made her own bed, even then her frustration is that it wouldn't be as neat as when I am the one handling it.
Hmm...I think, it wouldn't be long until I feel the need to pick my own China pattern.

Writing is killing me. The advisor demands an update on the progress every single day --before noon. Kayak vampir aja. Even crazier, he keeps e-mailing literatures deemed worthy to be used as references every other hour these past few days.
Me? I'm overwhelmed by the amount of data available and which ones to discuss, and how to make my case sound enough? Gosh. Me going bananas. Me could use some therapeutic running while listening to some of these maybe? That's it. Me going to Rec tonight.
Btw, what do you guys think about this Flourless Chocolate Cake recipe for Sunday Easter potluck at G's? I'm not in the mood for cooking meals.
PS:
Is it just me or are some parts of Gorillaz's Feel Good Inc. are kinda similar in melody to some parts of U2's Staring at the Sun? A tribute or something?
For instance, compare the sound from this part from the latter:
Summer stretching on the grass Summer dresses pass In the shade of a willow tree Creeps a crawling over me
with this part from the former:
Windmill, windmill for the land Learn forever hand in hand Take it all in on your stride It is shaking, falling down

Ika, Ade, NY, Evy, Chrissy, Melly, Kimmy, Ucok, Niko, anyone else, are you guys interested? Our continuous 45-min running so far approximately averaged a 13.5-min mile. Which means, we can finish this 5k in...half an hour? Hoahoahoahoa...
The catch is, it's at 8 in the morning, on a Saturday, which translates to a shorter Friday night fun.
Jadi kapan, Ded? Apa sih? (dengan nada sabar sedikit annoyed sambil mikir ini anak kok Mak Comblang banget ya jadi orang) Traktiran ultah-nya... Lo kira apa? Huahahua.... ...date ama Kak Inda? Iya nih, Ded. Udah dari Januari ditunggu-tunggu. Yang ada "aku" nggak pernah ditelponin lagi. Gimana sih "kamu". Huh!

Hello Yes....Xinda? Oh, hi Dr. K. How's the writing going? Uhm...it's going. I just finished r*e*t*e*n*t*i*o*n time analysis. OK, good. Let's meet on sometime on Sunday, say 4 PM? Make sure you follow the outline we made the other day, and I think you should do some more measurement. Maybe, longer time? Oh...OK. See you Sunday.
So...DANG! There goes the Saturday-Sunday plan.
Note to self:
Flag-footballing with the guys is fun.
Have to, get to, need to put an end on this...this ephemeral thing. But I can't. Will time...?

Bu Didi, saya pake rok loh. *bangga*
If you wonder what I do all day (and night), well when I'm not doing electrical measurement, go to launch.com and watch this video clip by The Postal Service titled Such Great Heights.
We don't have all the cool automatic stuff, we are getting things done in a rather manual mode here. I mean, our facility is a research scale, school scale nonetheless, but you get the idea. And, uhm, sans the intra-fab romance, of course.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful. You're beautiful, it's true. I saw your face in a crowded place, And I don't know what to do, 'Cause I'll never be with you.
Do you guys have a specific person(s) you would turn to and seek advice from --for instance, in the case of making a monumental life decision-- whose opinion you weigh more? And why him/her?
Is this too personal?
Heheh... Mine? There are two: my father (and my mother, they come in a package, no?) and Father Mike. My father, because, he is my father, and fathers know best. Sometimes I hope everything is as simple as that.
The Father, because he has made this set of value to follow makes sense. There were, well, there are and there will be times, heck, it's 95% of the time, when practicing religion feels like a mere formality, an automaton work of habit without a grasp of the true meaning behind it all. He has made it clear so not to flow into the same trap.
