Catholic Mass 101

OK, so you folks know, RCIA would definitely be the right place to inquire in the event you're interested in the Catholicism and such. But here goes a crash course in the more practical stuff of a Catholic Mass. Right on!

AMEN:
The only part of a prayer that everyone knows.

BULLETIN:
1. Parish information, read only during the homily.
2. Catholic air conditioning.
3. Your receipt for attending Mass.

CHOIR:
A group of people whose singing allows the rest of the congregation to lip-sync.

HOLY WATER:
A liquid whose chemical formula is H2OLY.

HYMN:
A song of praise, usually sung in a key three octaves higher than that of the congregation's range.

RECESSIONAL HYMN:
The last song at Mass, often sung a little more quietly since most of the people have already left.

INCENSE:
Holy Smoke!

JESUITS:
An order of priests known for their ability to found colleges with good basketball teams.

JONAH:
The original "Jaws" story.

JUSTICE:
When kids have kids of their own.

KYRIE ELIEISON:
The only Greek words that most Catholics can recognize besides gyros and baklava.

MAGI:
The most famous trio to attend a baby shower.

MANGER:
1. Where Mary gave birth to Jesus because Joseph wasn't covered by an HMO.
2. The Bible's way of showing us that holiday travel has always been rough.

PEW:
A medieval torture device still found in Catholic Churches.

PROCESSION:
The ceremonial formation at the beginning of Mass, consisting of altar servers, the celebrant, and late parishioners looking for seats.

RECESSIONAL:
The ceremonial procession at the conclusion of Mass - led by parishioners trying to beat the crowd to the parking lot.

RELICS:
People who have been going to Mass for so long, they actually know when to sit, kneel, and stand.

TEN COMMANDMENTS:
The most important Top Ten list not given by David Letterman.

USHERS:
The only people in the parish who don't know the seating capacity of a pew.

Sunday's tune & other stuff

You give your hand to me
And then you say hello
I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
But you don't know me

.
.
.

I never knew the art of making love
Though my heart aches with love for you
Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by
The chance that you might love me too

Yak, lagi keinget lagu ini, bukan karena pengalaman pribadi, tapi mengingat jaman-jamannya nonton My Best's Friend Wedding sampe 17 kali dalam beberapa bulan. Melancholic-pathetic? Definitely... he he he.

---

Waktu tadi sore sedang nonton pertandingan perebutan medali emas Olimpiade tenis perorangan putra, Mardy Fish (ehmm...cakepnyah) lawan Nicolas Massu (agak berandal kayaknya nih orang).

Kak Xinda Hon:
Hei, Kak Yadda Hon, Mardy Fish kali anaknya Big Fish ya.
Kak Yadda Hon:
*diem, mikir bentar* Oh enggak, kali anaknya Howdy, Fish!

hbahbuahau...

Pelajaran: jangan pernah meremehkan kegaringan Kak Yadda Hon.

----

Sekali-kali pengen juga nulis sesuatu yang bermutu di blog ini, tapi apa daya, kurang ada waktu (alesan, padahal nggak mampu, hehehe).

01:45

empty room, headphones, pumped up volume, closed eyes...

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

.

Yup yup, Ndoro Yadda's. hahaha...

See above.

Lost a friendship over something stupid?
Stupid on the other party's side, so yes.

Been really depressed before?
Twice in a bluemoon

Definitely.

Hugs.

What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex?
The eyes.

What is the first thing you think of when you wake up?

Trivia

1. Which continent did this lunch party take place?
2. What's up with the folks in the back not showing a bit of grinning smile all over the place?

Country music time

I don't believe in superstars
organic food and foreign cars
I don't believe the price of gold
the certainty of growing old
that right is right and left is wrong
that north and south can't get along
that east is east and west is west
and being first is always best.
But I believe in love,
I believe in babies
I believe in mom and dad,
and I believe in you.

Well I don't believe that heaven waits
for only those who congregate
I like to think of God as love
He's down below, He's up above
He's watching people everywhere
He knows who does and doesn't care
and I'm an ordinary man
sometimes I wonder who I am.
But I believe in love,
I believe in music
I believe in magic,
and I believe in you.

I know with all my certainty
what's goin' with you and me
is a good thing it's true,
I believe in you.

I don't believe virginity
is as common as it used to be
in working days and sleeping nights
that black is black and white is white
that Superman and Robin Hood
are still alive in Hollywood
that gasoline's in short supply
the rising cost of getting by.
But I believe in love,
I believe in old folks
I believe in children,
I believe in you.

I believe in love,
I believe in babies
I believe in mom and dad,
and I believe in you.

Chimichanga

OK, so the machine is down (again). I suppose, this is a good time to get some break and also another use of my expertise to find rare discontinued spare-parts and get the best deal out of them. A guy in New Jersey answered my telephone to my surprise. It was already 4:15 PM here, so I guess, either some people work longer time than most or start and close their business at later hours. The item looks promising, although, I need to make sure the connections match our current specs.

In a more breathtaking note, covering a 1.7 mile distance --with 4 short rests in between, nonetheless-- has become a nightly routine. The breath is always there and the good thing is, I slowly witness fats transforming into muscles. Sweet.

Out of curiosity, anyone knows the unfolding of H.M. Pulham, Esq.? I fell asleep halfway through.

urbi et orbi.

Phonecall

The scene was 9:26 AM this last Sunday. I was peacefully sleeping despite of the piercing rays of sun through the window which caused the gradual elevated temperature not suitable for a comfortable prolonged sleeping session.
*ring-ring*
X:
Hello
The other end:
H******? *someone with a borderline sober sound* (H****** is my full first name)

Yeah
What are u gonna do today?
Who's this? *didn't recognize the guy's voice*
Jim
Jim who?
I met you at the Northgate last night.
I'm nowhere near Northgate last night.
Really? I didn't meet you there last night?
Nope.
Well I'm sorry, you have a good morning.
???
I'm the only H****** in the school system --and quite possibly in the B/CS area. How did he get my number?
  1. From the B/CS phonebook, but it sorts people by their last name only.
  2. TAMU phonebook (the online version, naturally, sorts people by either name).
  3. One of my previous students mixed up my phone number on their address book.
  4. It was somebody making a prank call from information posted outside the laboratories.
  5. Fill in the blanks

Unfortunately, the caller ID displayed private untracked information from the call. Furthermore, I'm in no Matlock mood to investigate more on this. I have no idea why I'm posting it here.

Btw, the Northgate area houses several establishments which provide the closest thing to a night life here in our stupendous little town.

Have a good Monday, I guess.

6Flags

Lagi pengen pasang foto dan sedikit bernostalgila masa muda. Hehehe.

Hehehe lagi.

parrillada mixta

Nothing and everything aside, I hadnot been feeling good about myself in a long time. Yesterday, though, it fell into the other category. A good day like that should last more than 24 hours.

Tally on yesterday's wee morning entertainment, in chronological order:
1. The X-Files:
a. The one with the..., ah, couldn't remember what it was about.
b. The one with the COPS style moving camera following our scrupulous agents working on the killed-by-your-nightmare case.

2.The Blue Lagoon

All while devouring this novel.

The main characters of the said movie and novel were a pair of a boy and a gal at roughly the same age. When I was finally able to fall a sleep, somewhere in my dream, both plots got intertwined and turned into something of a more peculiar nature, I suppose there was some X-files stuff thrown into it. I wish I could be more narrative and proceed to explain it to you all.

Lesson learnt: Never underestimate the power of your REM.

Home sweet home

An e-mail from somebody thanking me for posting pictures of Rumbai (and vicinity).

From : T******26@aol.com
Sent : Tuesday, August 3, 2004 1:12 AM
To : xinda_huhu@msn.com
Subject : (no subject)

Wow, your pictures meant a lot to me. After living in Rumbai for four years, I'm devastated that no one in my family thought to take pictures of things that we saw everyday. I haven't been to Indonesia in ten years, but this summer I took a trip with my family to China. It was the first time since Indonesia that I had been back to Asia. Now I am all of a sudden so homesick for Indonesia and no one around me understands, except for my family. Thank you again for having those pictures posted.

What to reply? Tell her I'm planning a trip home this December and promise to take more meaningful shots? Ah, home sweet home. After three years, I wish I could stay longer than two weeks.

Basket case

Do you have the time
to listen to me whine
About NOTHING and EVERYTHING
all at once
I am one of those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the CREEPS
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm CRACKING UP
Am I just PARANOID?
Or am I just STONED

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
SHE says it's lack of sex
that's bringing me down
I went to a whore
HE said my life's a bore
So quit my whining cause
it's bringing HER down

Grasping to CONTROL
So I BETTER hold on
